Here's what I'm up to in NYC for the next week or so..
I'll be playing solo at this show tomorrow..
Corn Mo w/ Jerm Pollet and Dan Potthast July, 7 2007 at Parkside Lounge 317 E Houston at Attorney, NYC, New York Cost : $5 7pm start
Also, I'm playing guitar in a play in Soho that my buddy Jerm wrote called Johnny Applefucker. It should be really funny. Here's a link.
http://www.sohothinktank.org/icefactory.html#Jonny_Applefker
It's playing on the 11th, 12th, and 13th. My buddy James Rickman from The Rinse/ Slow Gherkin is also playing in the band for the play. He's playing drums, and I believe will be dressed up like a deer. I will be dressed up like a bear.

Tour news and other bs OK, so I am out on tour again playing solo shows. I just woke up in Apache Junction. Which is a small town outside of Phoenix. I'm staying at Andy's house from Fancy Pants. His mom is out in the living room and Andy is still sleeping. I'm typing. It feels good to be out touring again. And a little bit Schizophrenic too. I've been working a lot in Santa Cruz lately, doing construction stuff, teaching guitar lessons, and even working a bit on the weekends and evenings painting houses, so being on the road right now feels really relaxing. I've been sleeping late, and the shows in AZ are all super close together, and there hasn't been any long drives, so there's lots of time to just hang out and relax. To actually have time to sit down and type an update on here feels pretty therapeutic.
I've played two shows so far. The first in Tempe on Sat. at Madhouse Records, and the second in Tucson on Sunday. The Madhouse Records show was really great. They do shows in this warehouse shed that is completely empty except for the PA and lots of concrete. Concrete walls, concrete floor, the stage is an old loading dock- concrete. It's super loud and painful for a full band, but for playing solo, it works out pretty well. Lots of natural verb. Anyway, the turnout was really good, and I got to play the new MU330 zombie song, and the crowd actually turned into zombies and killed me at the end of the song. Fun! I was actually feeling really sick all day (the two days before I had stayed home from work) so I was kind of stressing all day, thinking that my voice was going to give out on the 1st or 2nd song, but it didn't (praise Jesus!) and it actually loosened up and felt really strong.
Sunday night in Tucson was one of those shows that you call "intimate" to make yourself feel better about the turnout. I like Skrappy's a lot as a venue, but not too many people came out at all, except for the 6 or so kick-ass Phoenix friends that drove down to the show. I really wish I could take the Phoenix crowd on tour w/ me so they could show the rest of the world how awesome I am.
There was no show last night, so we went over to Andy's friend Nolen's house and hung out w/ a bunch of their friends and I got to play the new Nintendo Wii. It's pretty amazing. I thought it was a little goofy that Nolen asked us to actually wear the safety strap for the controller that goes around your wrist.. Until we were playing tennis and Andy's controller flew out of his hand at a velocity that easily could have sent it flying through the TV screen. It luckily deflected off of the wall and batteries went flying. Amazingly, the controller still worked. And, to Andy's credit, he was actually wearing the safety strap, but the flimsy little rope that attaches to the controller just snapped when it slid out of his hand. Whoops.
Tonight I'm back at the Trunk Space. It was such a great show last time... I'm kind of nervous to come back. Today during the day I will go thrift store shopping and try to find some kind of goofy outfit to wear for the MU330 x-mas show in St. Louis on the 23rd.
I'm excited to head to Florida tomorrow. There is a chance that I will get to go to Disney World for free, which I'm pretty darn pumped about. OK, that's it for now. Must find breakfast! And water. Damn it's dry in the Dessert. Who'd a thunk?

I had surgery on my toe Thursday morning. They shaved a marble sized bone callus off the bottom of my left big toe. The actual surgery was not to big of a deal. They gave me good drugs and I woke up as they were wrapping up my foot. Hopefully in a few weeks I'll be skipping rope again. That would be a hoot. Until then, I'm on the couch with my foot in the air, and playing guitar until I'm cross-eyed. Any good movie suggestions?

I went to Fishbone the other night at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz. I skanked through the entire show. They are still amazing. Angelo Moore is absolutely the best performer I've ever witnessed in my entire life. When I saw them in High School (91') in St. Louis on the Reality of my Surroundings Tour, I saw him on stage and thought, Oh... that's how it's done. Completely life changing. I went home from that concert and sat in my room spinning (Unyielding Conditioning) on my turntable, and I realized, Oh my god... I have to start thinking about the lyrics that I write. Once again, he showed me how it's done. They played Ma and Pa the other night and my head nearly exploded. I tried to talk to Angelo before the show, and tell him how much he has changed my life for the better, but I couldn't put sentences together. Embarrassing. Oh well. What a great night.
Here's what happens when you plug the word "skanked" into the Live journal spell checker. I'd say I did pretty much all of these at the concert. Substitute any of the below words at will.
skanked- skunked, spanked, swanked, snaked, kinked, scanned, skinned, snacked, scanted, skulked, spunked

Tampa Airport
I'm in the Tampa airport witing for my flight to STL. They have free wireless EVERYWHERE in the airport. Amazing. Tampa rocks.
Gainesville.. Mustard Plug?
The night before last I played in Gainesville at Eddie C's w/ the Mad Agents and Skif Dank. I had forgotten that I had played there before with Mustard Plug. At first it looked like there weren't going to be that many people.. but it eventually filled up and turned into a really fun show. I've been playing the song "Three Days Till X-mas" on these four solo FL dates, and in Gainesville, I discovered that if people jingle their keys over the intro guitar part.. it actually sounds a little bit like sleigh bells. Fun! A true crowd pleaser.. right up there with waving lighters.. only slightly less dangerous. Skiff Dan graciously invited me up on stage during their set for amped up versions of KKK Hiway and "LA." It was fun to jump around on stage and just be lead singer sans guitar. I tend to spaz out a bit and get really out of breath. For some reason I thought it would be fun to say things into the mic like "Thanks, we are Mustard Plug!" I guess there was just something fun about Skif Dank doing an MU330 song and announcing "WE ARE MUSTARD PLUG!" Too much beer, Gorden. After the show we went to the famous 5 star pizza right next to where the Common Grounds, and ordered many pies. Marc and I drove back to Daytona / Ormond beach area and managed to get to sleep at about 5:30 am.
Spike the Goat
In the morning, I attempted to feed Marc''s goat a slice of pizza, but he wouldn't eat it. He just sniffed at it a little bit and let it fall in the hay. I thought goats would eat anything.. even a tin can. I thought the leftover 5 star slice would totally blow his mind and that he would flip out and think that pizza was the best thing in the world, and then I would be his best friend in the world because I was the person who had handed him this magnificent blend of crust, cheese, and sauce that had exploded on his little goat taste buds. It had the potential to change his whole existance, but he just spit it out when I touched it to his goat lips. In a way, I was kind of releieved because I have no idea what goats are really supposed to eat, and I would have felt really bad if he got sick or had a belly ache from eating stale pizza.
Tampa- The Pegasus Lounge
The fourth and final date of the FL tour was last night at the Pegasus Lounge in Tampa, right accross the street from Busch Gardens. The Pegasus is a dirty bar/rock venue in a seedy liitle stip-mall with lots of Christmas Lights (Even a tree!) and the stage in the front window. It really reminded me of a lot of the clubs MU330 would play when we were first starting to tour. I felt right at home and the staff was really nice. It was a long night of music. Lots of bands. The Mad Agents, and Skif Dank of course, but also Safety, CIO, and Is it Safe. Of all the FL shows, Tampa was the best attended.. and the kids were possibly the most amped to rock out. The Mad Agents started it off and got a great response from the crowd, and I knew it would be a great show. Before I played, a kid named Dan came up and asked what songs I would be playing and said he had some requests, so I had them write an entire list of songs out, and I just picked songs off of his list. It was a fun way to write a set list.. or not write one, I guess. I wound up playing a few songs that I don't normally paly solo, like "Tune Me Out" and "December." When it came time for my show, I decided to give the no mic, play down on the floor routine another try. It wound up working out much better in Tampa than it did in Jacksonville. Lots of clapping, singing along, and jingling car keys made this my favorite solo show in a long time. It was a great way to end this short little mini-tour. Big Thank-you's to Chris and Sarah for setting the whole thing up, and to Marc Dank for driving me all over FL and for sharing his squat with me and Spike.

I'm in FL and the tour is going really well. I flew in to Orlando on the 14th, and despite having to check my acoustic guitar at the gate due to a completely full flight, when I opened the case at baggage clam, the Tacoma was still in one piece. Unfortunatly, my bags were missing. Such a hopeless feeling, watching the same four suitcases circling round and round on the baggage carousel. Luckily though, when I went to the AA baggage desk, the attendant showed me right to my bags, which had somehow arrived in Orlando on an earlier flight. Weird.
Anyway, Chris and Sarah (who set up the whole FL string of shows) were nice enough to pick me and my independent-minded bags and take me to their friend's apartment (Billy, JT, Danielle.. and shoots, I'm sorry I forgot JT's girlfriend's name) where I spent the night on their futon w/ a kitty sleeping on my chest. I'm normally really allergic, but some reason... no itching and no sneezing. The idea that someday I could actually live w/ a cat and not be miserable is pretty exciting...
The next day I spent a few hours at the apt. complex pool, playing guitar and working on monster songs for the new MU330 album. I finished writing lyrics for the Mummy song and for a new one about witchcraft that I think Gerry will sing if I can talk him into it. As I was sitting by the pool writing, a guy walked by and asked me, "Hey, you know how to tune one of those things? How much would you charge to tune my guitar?" "I won't charge you anything. Just go get it and bring it out here." I said. So this guy goes and gets his guitar and brings back a bunch of beer, and we wind up sitting by the pool for another few hours, playing guitar, hanging out, and drinking some brews. I wrote out some guitar chords for him and an Am pentatonic scale. It was a great afternoon.
That night's show at Will's Pub was really fun. It's a cool bar upfront, and the backroom has the stage where the Rock happens. The Sweet Kings, and Mad Agents rocked it first, and I went on third, right before the mighty Skif Dank. It was a fun show, w/ a surprising number of sing-a-long action. It was really great to see Skif Dank play again, and hear all those songs that I haven't heard since the mid-nineties!
After the show I rode back to Ormond by the Sea (Just North of Daytona Beach) with Marc Dank. We stayed at this house that has a Goat (Spike), a rabbit (Mr. Bunny), a cat (Scout), and a Duck (Mr. Duck) The goat is the best. When we fed him in the morning, he got really excited and bucked around the yard and would rear up on his back legs and try to but your shins. It was funny. He wouldn't butt hard. He is very gentle and knows that he is playing. He likes to push his horns into you and sniff your face. I was surprised at how affectionate he was. He really just wants to be pet and fed.. so much like a pup. So much like E-town and Roopert.
Last night we played in Jacksonville at Thee Imperial. As I was getting ready to go on, the soundguy was nowhere to be found, so I just started to play down on the floor in front of the stage.. with mixed results. It was cool because it was intimate and in-your-face, but a lot of people just kept talking, especially in between songs. It was hard to sing and talk over everyone, and to make things worse, I hadn't realized (Because the house music had been playing all night) that there was a band practicing upstairs from the club. So in addition to the chatter, I was also competing with the constant bass and drum thud. It still turned out well though. I took some requests, and played the MU330 song, "Ireland" and actually had a skanking circle pit rotating around me and my guitar case. Weird and fun. I'm back at the farm now and we're getting ready to feed the goat again. I need to go grab my shin-guards!

FL hooray!
I'm going to be playing in FL next month w/ my old friends Skif Dank. Oh yeah! Very exciting. Other things I've been up to musically... I'm still working on recording more Spitzer stuff, I'm still working on recording some suf-ska-fantastic sing-along stuff w/ AJ and Matt from Slow Gherkin. (Ted from MU330 will be recording some drums pretty soon for that project.) I'm still working on recording a brand new solo album that will be all SKA... and I'm still working on an album with my girlfriend Shannon which will be entirely focused on cats and dogs and all profits will go to local shelters, and I'm still working on the new MU330 album which will be a monster album including songs about Zombies, Frankenstein, Vampyre girls, Mummies, Wolfman, etc.... It's coming along really well and we will probably record some drums for that around Christmas. Maybe 96 will be the year that I tie up all these loose ends. 96... the year to complete all projects! Also, MU330 will be flying to Alaska in April to play some shows... That will be the 48th state we've played in.. any guesses as to what are the only two states we haven't soiled yet?

This fall, I'm doing something completely ridiculous. On Sept. 9th I'll start pedaling my bike south from Seattle, and won't stop until I get to San Diego. Well, actually I'll be stopping quite a few times for food and water... and to play shows. It's the Plea for Peace Bicycle Tour 2005!
Basically, it’s a charity fund raising tour to open up an all ages teen center in San Jose. For more information on the cause, you can check out <http://www.pleaforpeace.com/>
I’ve been training for the last few months, and it’s going pretty well. I have to admit, I’m a little nervous about it though. I think we’re going to try and average around 75 miles a day. I’ve never done anything this physically demanding in my life! Gerry from MU330 will be driving Mike Park’s van along the route with all our gear, and we’ll be camping all the way down the coast to try and save money so more will go towards the teen center.
We are desperately in need of donations to help make the ride a success. The financial responsibility for getting a bicycle and all the gear together for this tour has rested completely on my own shoulders, and because the 5 1/2 week tour is an attempt to raise money for the charity, that basically means 5 1/2 weeks with no income. Any donations you could spare would help us greatly help us greatly along the way, and in turn, help the dream of this teen center to become a reality.
As I look through my address book, I can see that most of the people I’m contacting are fellow musicians who are just as broke as I am. For everyone who can’t afford a donation.. Please just take this e-mail as a “hey, here’s what I’m doing this fall” kind of thing. Please imagine that I didn’t just hit you up for $$$.
For anyone willing to make a contribution, there is a donation form attached. These contributions will go directly to the Plea for Peace Foundation and will go towards the teen center. Another option would be to send a check made out to “Dan Potthast” to 145 Franklin Street, Santa Cruz, CA 95060. These donations would go directly towards fixing my early 80’s model road bike that I bought for 5 bucks at a rummage sale. It’s going to take a lot of duct tape to get her to San Diego.
One last thing to consider.. The ride is about 1400 miles long, so if you were to sponsor me at a rate of half a cent per mile.. That would be a 7 dollar donation!
Any other questions, please feel free to e-mail me at dantacruz@aol.com
Thanks for your time. -Dan P.

I'm back at my mom's in STL. It's almost X-mas. I broke my big toe on Halloween and I still can't walk! We play a show in Chicago with the Blue Meanies in a few days. I will have to sit down on stage with my foot up on a chair. Ahhhrrrrgggh! We had MU330 band practice today. It was great to play together again. We worked on a set for the Chicago show today. We dug into some of the songs off the X-mas album. I'm psyched to play them even though I'll be sitting down.

MU330 just finished up a six week tour today. I'm in St. Louis at my mom's house and I can't sleep. Today in Santa Cruz, my friend Max adopted a pitbull from the shelter and brought it over to our house. It attacked our dog Ellie and almost killed her. Had Joey not been there to choke that dog, E-town would be dead right now. Ellie is probably having surgery as I type. Shannon was supposed to fly to St. Louis in the morning. I think she might cancel her flight and stay in Santa Cruz to be with Elliott. I haven't seen Shannon in almost 5 weeks. I might try to fly back to Santa Cruz early to be with them. I'm not sure what to do. Tomorrow things will be more clear, and Max's new dog will probably be euthanized. Thank you, Joey, for saving Ellie Belly Blaze Bucker's life.

The Hurricane is following us! We're at Grayton State Park on the panhandle of FL. We thought we were out of Frances' reach, but they're evacuating the park today, so we're going to drive toward New Orleans and possibly look for a hotel and maybe go see a movie. Any suggestions? What's a good movie to go see that's out now? I really can not wait to get back in the groove of playing shows. This hurricane business is for the birds. I'm excited to get to New Orleans too. I could really go for a shrimp po-boy today for breakfast.

I'm on tour in FL with MU330 right now, and a hurricane is getting ready to hit the coast. It looks like a whole string of shows is going to be cancelled. Bummer. We may be heading to New Orleans early to eat many shrimp po-boys.

I'm at SFO, waiting to fly out to the UK and meet up with the rest of MU330 for UK/Russia/Europe tour. I can't believe we play in Moscow two weeks from today. Crazy!
Ted and I are flying in to the UK a couple days early to practice with Brendan. I'm pretty excited because we're going to get to see Slow Gherkin's last show of their UK tour w/ Caeser Soze. I've got a 5 hour wait till my flight leaves, and then a three hour layover in Calgary. I'm going to be burt by the time I land in London. At least I'll have a couple days to adjust to the time difference.
I'll have US MU330 dates posted here and on the page real soon.

I ate a shrimp po-boy from Verti Mart for breakfast this morning. It was one of the best meals I've ever eaten. I sat on the sidewalk with Treephort and washed it down with a 40. It was one of those rare, perfect, tour moments, when everything is going exactly as planned.

So I haven't been updating my journal lately because I've learned how to update my website. I usually update the news and tour diary the most. Here's some stuff from my more recent tour diary entries... you could just go to http://www.mu330.com/danpotthast/frameset.htm too. -dp
March 7th, 2004 Drop and give me 20, soldier!!!
I'm on my way back to the SC. Las Vegas was a really good weekend. On Sat. I went to a really good vegetarian Chinese restaurante and had fake chicken. I love fake meat! After that I drove with Rene out to Red Rock which is this park outside of Las Vegas where the rocks are... well... red.We climbed around on the rocks and saw wild donkeys. The park is really beautiful and it was good to go to Las Vegas and see something besides the city and the strip.
Later that night we went to see the "new and improved" pirate show outside of the Treasure Island casino on the strip. It was truely one of the most bizarre things I've ever witnessed. The Treasure Island casino is evidently trying to sex up their image a bit and become a little more "hip." They've changed the sign outside and now call the casino "T.I." and the nightly pirate fighting show outside is now this weird mix of "Pirates of the Carribean," a Janet Jackson video, and some kind of weird 80's bondage theme. Um... I don't know how else to describe it. Strange. I love Las Vegas! Thanks to Rene for driving me around all day and taking me to the show at the Cooler.
Speaking of the Cooler, what a weird show. The Cooler Lounge is this club that's in a strip mall way outside of downtown. It was really a drag that it was 21+, because there was a group of 5-7 people outside that came to see the show and couldn't get in, so they stood and watched the whole show from outside, like total troopers! The worst part was that all the people outside were the people I stayed with the night before! Arrrgh.
The first band to play was called Over The Line, and they won me over with screaming harmonized guitars. Also, their drummer was easily one of the best drummers I've ever seen live. I played 2nd, and there were about 35-40 people in the bar during my set, most of them sitting at the bar with their backs to me. All of the people seated at the bar who didn't have their backs to me seemed to be constantly heckling and/or yelling obcenities. Fun! For some reason at bar shows, people like to yell out names of people that I look like.
"BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BUDDY HOLLY!!!"
"BLAH BLAH BLAH, ELVIS COSTELLO"
I used to think that people would yell out anybody's name that wore glasses, but last night in Vegas, somebody yelled out, "BLAH BLAH BLAH BILL NYE THE SCIENCE GUY!" stretching the "people that I look like" catagory from just "all people with glasses" to "All Nerds."
There were actually a group of people standing towards the stage who were really into the show and were shouting out requests, so it wasn't all bad.
The heckling didn't bother me too much though. I think after being in Sweden last week and getting heckled by a bunch of angry, Nazi skinheads, a roomfull of drunks in Las Vegas seems like a holiday.
The last band to play after me was GDB who were great. They played a mix of Reggae and some Ska. Their guitar player totally shreds, too!
After the show I played a set outside for the people who couldn't get in. There was this guy at athe show who was super drunk, and he dropped a $20 bill into my case, and demanded that I drop and do 20 push-ups with him. I made it to 18 and collapsed. I just froze and couldn't do the last two. I am still sore today. the show outside was actually my favorite part of the whole night. I played a bunch of requests that I never ever play.
After the show, I stayed with some guys who were at the show. I feel really bad because I can't remember their names! They were really nice. Almost unbelievably nice. After staying up till about 4 in the morning, one of the guys actually set his alarm for 8:00 AM and drove my butt to the airport.
So, that was my Las Vegas weekend. Big thank you to Michael for making it happen. I hope to come back soon. -DP
March 5th, 2004 Las Vegas Adventure
Yesterday was fun. I took a plane from San Jose to Las Vegas, and then rode a city bus into downtown Las Vegas with all my stuff. City Busses are crazy. I love watching people on the bus! It makes for good stories when I play. I need to write some songs about people on the bus. I think that would be an amazing album if I could write an entire album about people that I meet on the bus.
I was really just guessing which bus to take and where to get off, but I managed to land luckily within a couple blocks of the club, the "Iowa Cafe." Big thanks to Mason for the free Tuna sandwich. "My name's Mason and you can't miss me. I'll be the guy with the cowboy hat!"
It was a free show at this cafe that was decorated with all sorts of Iowa paraphanalia. I guess there were about 65-70 people there by the time I finally started playing, and I felt really good about the show. I met some nice people at the show and they let me sleep on their couch. Thanks to Chris, Rene, Dan, Dano, and Rey... hope I didn't miss anybody. Oh wait, thanks to Kyle too for kicking everybody's butt at Mario party.
This morning when I woke up, one of the first things Dan said to me was "Good morning. Do you want some Kool Aid or some chips?" Dan is a genius! We wound up eating these weird peppermint patty chocolate things for breakfast that are shaped like pringles, but there's nothing that even slightly resembles a potato chip in them. Weird.
March 5th, 2004 Right Back At It I'm waiting to get on a plane to Vegas. I'm playing two shows this weekend. A free all ages show on Friday at the Iowa cafe and a 21+ show on sat at the cooler lounge. It feels weird to be getting on a plane and leaving so soon after getting back from the UK. I'm hoping the shows go well. this will be the first time I've played Vegas since the Ska Summit. There were thousands of people at that show, so it will be interesting to see if some of those people come out.
I had band practice last night with Shannon and Greg. It felt good to play with a band again. We're all super psyced, because Buzz in Brighton is starting to book a UK tour in July for the Dan P. trio. Shannon and Greg have never been to England, so it's going to be super fun to introduce them to all the UK freaks that I've met on past tours with MU330 and by myself.
I'm hoping to schedule some recording time with the three of us really soon, so that hopefully I'll have something new by the end of summer. We've got about 8 new songs worked out with the band that I haven't recorded yet, and then I've got about 15 others that I've writtten that could be recorded with just acoustic guitar and vocals or worked out with the band. I'm really feeling like recording is overdue. I need to get some songs down on tape so I can move ahead with writing some new material.

Just added a Sally T's show in St. Peters, MO on Monday, Dec. 29th with Bagheera. If anyone is slightly considering coming to this show.... PLEASE DO! Monday night shows scare me!
The show at Porter dining hall the other night at UCSC with Humor Force 5 was a trip. It was a totally different scene than what I'm used to, but it was great. I opened the show and played three songs solo, which was pretty fun. The mindset of people at a comedy show is a lot different than the mindset of people at a rock show. People at a rock show in general want to rock, and people at comedy show want to laugh. I always feel good about a show if I can get the crowd to do both.
After the first three songs, Shannon and Greg hopped up with me, played 1 song, and then we were finished until Humor force 5's intermission. It was weird to play such a short set, but kind of cool too. We played four songs at the break, and then left stage again for their 2nd set. They were really funny. I was surprised at how many people turned up for the show... probably around 150-175. From what I understand, that' a great turnout for UCSC.
At the end of the show, we rocked four more songs and then I sat on the edge of the stage and played acoustic requests for about 15 people who stuck around. Thanks to everybody who came out and bought CD's. It felt great to have a good hometown show.

Today I play on KZSC at 3:00 with Shannon and Greg. It should be fun.
I'm thinking about recording some new stuff in April in Chicago. I figured out last night that I've got 6 new songs that are totally worked out with the band and are just about ready to be recorded, and 21 or so new songs that I could record acoustic. Some of the 21 songs are really short, but still that's too many for an album. I need to get on it and sort through some stuff and pick the good ones.
